equation to measure the deflection in a stay-cable with a unit load

Can anyone either give me an answer, or point me to a good book or journal article that gives an equation for finding the deflection in a taut cable with an externally applied unit load? The equation can be for any type of taut cable, I don't need anything specific; I just need to see how the equation is written.

The big picture I hope to get is to model a simply supported stay cable with two external forces, one is an applied force, and the other is a damping force. However, most journal articles I have seen are too complex for me. I don’t have the knowledge to calculate the deflection and acceleration from the complex equation of motion formulas.

Thanks in advance for the help.
